Beach level is measured relative to the top of the iron sheet piling at 19 locations along the rear of Bawdsey Beach, at the locations shown above. These back of beach levels change in response to changing wave conditions, and in particular the size of the waves and the direction the approach the beach.Â

Over the last decade beach levels have, on average, lowered - i.e. the beach is gradually being eroded - and if you compare the beach levels in June 2013 with those from the most recent June, the beach level has dropped by an average of 1m. But you can also see that there are phases when the beach level has grown - the summers of 2014 to 2016 had a much fuller beach than before and subsequently.
