FINGERPRINTING
The following information is to provide clarification and consistency in the procedures for performing background checks on individuals that volunteer in the Clarkston Community School district.
1. The State of Michigan requires by law that school districts obtain fingerprints of school employees as well as school volunteers in specific circumstances.
2. Clarkston Community Schools Board Policies require all potential volunteers must be screened through iCHAT (Internet Criminal History Tool) OR obtain Volunteer fingerprints at no cost to the volunteer.
3. ICHATS would be utilized in a school setting where volunteers are working in the school with staff present. The Volunteer iChat form must be completed before your first team meeting at a school and should be turned into the school secretary. (iChat). Please note that only one iChat is required per school year, so if you’ve already completed one with your school you do not have to repeat this.
4. VOLUNTEER FINGERPRINTS must be obtained if the parent is hosting a group outside of school hours, such as Battle of the Books.
5. If you are leading a Battle of the Books team and were NOT fingerprinted last year, then you have to be fingerprinted THIS year to serve as a volunteer battle coach.
Also, if you are a CCS or Edustaff employee working currently for the district and already have been fingerprinted you do not have to repeat this process, but please let Amy Walsh know so she can confirm.
6. Coaches may book their fingerprint appointment. Appointments will begin in January after we return from break on Tuesdays and Thursdays and generally take about 15 minutes or less; there is no charge for the Volunteer print. The fingerprint will be taken by Amy Walsh at Clarkston Community Schools, Administration Building, 6389 Clarkston Road, Clarkston, MI 48348. The RI-030 and RI-088A forms must be completed and brought with you to the appointment. Also, a valid driver’s license must be present at the time of appointment.
If you have questions regarding background checks or fingerprinting, please contact Amy at adwalsh@clarkston.k12.mi.us.
7. All records are kept confidential and will not be received or disseminated to anyone not directly involved in the screening process.
8. The district reserves the right to perform additional background checks at any time for the duration of the volunteer's service in the district. This can be performed regardless of self-disclosure of inappropriate behavior following the initial check.
9. A master list of approved volunteers will be maintained by the district in accordance with Board policy.
