Bass music is a term used to describe several genres of electronic dance music and hip hop music[1] arising from the 1980s on, focusing on a prominent bass drum and/or bassline sound. As one source notes, there are "many different types of bass music to fall into, each putting a different spin on one of music's loudest elements".[2] Typically, the bass sound is created using synthesizers and drum machines such as the influential Roland TR-808.

Hey guys! I was wondering if anybody had any tips on mixing dubstep and bass music (think Arius, Zomboy, Culprate, etc.). I've made a few sets in this set of genres, and I feel like there is a lot more in technique and tips to be gained.

Also, integrating a sense of showmanship. I've always been really into scratching, but mixing that with this type of music is really difficult, I've done it here and there but finding other elements of showmanship (some sort of controllerism or something) is a big thing that I'm focusing on too. I know that it sounds a little ridiculous and out-of-the-norm for this genre but whatever I suppose.

Music is both heard and felt-tactile sensation is especially pronounced for bass frequencies. Although bass frequencies have been associated with enhanced bodily movement, time perception, and groove (the musical quality that compels movement), the underlying mechanism remains unclear. In 2 experiments, we presented high-groove music to auditory and tactile senses and examined whether tactile sensation affected body movement and ratings of enjoyment and groove. In Experiment 1, participants (N = 22) sat in a parked car and listened to music clips over sound-isolating earphones (auditory-only condition), and over earphones plus a subwoofer that stimulated the body (auditory-tactile condition). Experiment 2 (N = 18) also presented music in auditory-only and auditory-tactile conditions, but used a vibrotactile backpack to stimulate the body and included 2 loudness levels. Participants tapped their finger with each clip, rated each clip, and, in Experiment 1, we additionally video recorded spontaneous body movement. Results showed that the auditory-tactile condition yielded more forceful tapping, more spontaneous body movement, and higher ratings of groove and enjoyment. Loudness had a small, but significant, effect on ratings. In sum, findings suggest that bass felt in the body produces a multimodal auditory-tactile percept that promotes movement through the close connection between tactile and motor systems. We discuss links to embodied aesthetics and applications of tactile stimulation to boost rhythmic movement and reduce hearing damage. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2020 APA, all rights reserved).

Any good recs for some well recorded music featuring good double bass tracks? Just discovered this site. I'm trying to finish piecing together my setup and trying to build up a good lossless music collection. Thanks for any input! Glad I found this place!

There are many great jazz bass players. What kind of music are you interested in? I think anyone would find most of Charlie Haden's albums fine--try the Montreal tapes (they are all good; I especially like the the one with Paul Bley), or the several duet albums--Haden and Hampton Hawes perhaps my favorite. The solo album by Dave Holland is great. There is a young guy named Stephen Crump, who plays with the Vijay Iyre quartet. He has led a couple of albums, with a guitar player (can't remember his name) that is well worth hearing. If you like stuff that is a little more demanding, all of the albums by Mike Bisio and William Parker are fantastic, but mostly out there. Bisio's Undulations and Parker's Sound Unity or his duos with Hamid Drake are on the tamer side. I was just listening to a great duo album--Luminesence by Daniel Carter and Rueben Rading. If you can deal with really far out stuff, take a listen to Peter Kowald, Was Ist Das. And then, of course, there is Charlie Mingus. You might have to go to Downtown Music Gallery's excellent site to find some of these. They provide excellent, extended comments written by the DMG staff on most albums.

Mikyung Sung's "The Colburn Sessions (double album, 2023) is stunning. Easily the best bowed (classical) double bass solo playing I've ever heard - gorgeous, exciting, engaging, moving, tender, and expressive.

This initiative gives an infusion of cash to diverse, talented artists with demonstrated financial need so that they can put money towards whatever is limiting their career growth. That could be production equipment, music software, rent, groceries, or other bills.

The selected artists will still need to do the work to take their music and career to the next level. We hope to contribute towards their success and allow them to commit more time to their music careers by relieving them of some of these financial pressures.

The initiative will provide funding to 10 artists of $10,000 each. We will be looking for applications with solid music and thoughtful answers. The goal is to give the winners a platform to help create a more diverse community of Bass Music artists.

At this time, brand new producers and producers who are not primarily focused on Bass Music will not be considered. We are looking for experienced artists who have already released music.

When I first heard and saw Charles perform, in 2016 at a festival in California, I was blown away and knew that this was the kind of sound and story I wanted to tell through my own music. He proved that you could play soft, raw, and emotional music in a bass music set and it would be received well by even the biggest crowds. This is something no one really knew was possible. The sky was suddenly the limit for us all.

I had the privilege of being his first promoter in Denver and we developed a great friendship. He was always lifting up his musician friends who were just getting started by making sure they were included on lineups. One story his agent told me: [Ingalls] requested his name be smaller on a festival poster, because he wanted to be the same size as everyone else, which I have never heard of anyone doing. His music will live on forever, but I think perhaps the biggest impression he left on others was his kindness. ff782bc1db
