Time to Share/Reflect

Laura Bradley's blog on makerspace captures the thinking behind this page:

At the end of the day's workshop:

  • Golden line: have students find a golden line in what they wrote during work time and read just that line.

  • Author's chair: invite a student to read his/her work to the class. They might sit literally in a chair reserved for the day's author or stay at their seat.

  • Quaker share: students read a bit of their day's work to the class or just listen to their peers. When they read, they stand up and then sit down again at the end of their reading.

  • Partner share: students talk to their writing partner about what they learned or tried or struggled with.

  • Share one word -- one that sparkles and dazzles -- from your work.

  • Cold call on students, write an exit slip, or talk to your partner to answer this question: How did I get smarter as a writer today?

At the end of the writing project:

  • Publish their writing for a class magazine or for another class.

  • Publishing party: dim the lights, bring in the coffee or hot cocoa and have students read their work.

  • Post the work and have students do a gallery walk, perhaps using sticky notes to leave compliments on the writing.

  • Celebrate, celebrate, celebrate.
