The FIDE World Cup takes place July 12-August 6, 2021 in Sochi, Russia. 206 players will compete in a revamped format, for a record prize fund of $1,890,000 and two spots in the 2022 Candidates Tournament.
The format is an eight-round knockout tournament. Players are paired against each other in two-game matches of standard chess, one game with each color. Matches that end in 1-1 will go to rapid/blitz tiebreaks.
The time control for the standard games is 90 minutes for 40 moves followed by 30 minutes for the rest of the game with a 30-second increment per move, starting from move one. The tiebreak consists of two 25|10 games, if needed two 10|10 games, if needed two 5|3 games, and finally a 5 vs 4 armageddon.
