Ethics are important in every profession, for much the same reason that laws are important to society at large: they outline agreed standards of conduct for a large group of people. Standards of conduct are needed in both cases because all individual’s morals are different. My idea of right and wrong can differ significantly from yours, and humans are really good at justifying things they shouldn’t do. So, if we are to get along in society without too much friction, we have laws to outline what we can and can’t do, and if we are to perform a role like teaching, we have professional ethics to outline what we can and can’t do.
