Powerlifting is a style of weight training that emphasizes the development of strength. As a competitive sport, powerlifting requires competitors to demonstrate their strength through three attempts at single repetitions of one or more of the bench press, squat and deadlift, and most competitions determine winners based on a total of the maximum weight lifted in all of those movements.

Whether you compete or not, are male or female, young or old, you can get stronger. Athletes in many disciplines, including team sports, olympic sports, bodybuilding and crossfit incorporate the powerlifts into their training routines to increase their base strength.

Powerlifting has been expanding in the collegiate environment. In the past few years extramural teams have been established at Sheridan College, Fleming College and Seneca College. Both Sheridan and Seneca have hosted powerlifting meets in the past year. The OPA also hosts a meet specifically for college and university students annually.
