Day 12 (4/26): Chefchaouen
This morning started pretty dramatically ! I lost my phone for about 45 mins ! It was panic for that period of time but everyone was so kind and helpful. Karen took change of the search mission and kept calling my phone, texted my husband. On her 10 th attempt possibly a woman picked up my phone and she ran and gave the phone to the manager of hotel Tarek (he helped the whole time) who was able to the woman to bring the phone back to the hotel ! Thank god !
We missed the first period of teaching and our kind hotel manager drove us to the school since Aziz had to go back to the school to teach the first period.
Period 1: Mrs. Khadija’s class. This was a class of students who are learning English for the first time. Given that once again we were very pleasantly impressed how well prepared they were. The class presented about herbal medicine and traditional medicine. Spoke about traditional clothes and music. They played short videos and interviews. Overall very well done !
Period 2: this is a more advanced class. They have been learning English for 3 years now. Their topic brain drain
When people leave their birth country for better life to a different country. Consequences : loss of state investment in education, technology gap, lack of manpower ( doctors and nurses leaving )
Is Morocco trying to fix it ?
Possible solutions:
Improve working conditions including addressing issues like positive work life balance, job security and salary.
Invest money in education, focus on science and math. So that we can’t find opportunities in Morocco.
At the end of the, Khadija asked us for our comments and I spoke to the class about my experience and what led me to leave my home country. What are things I still feel torn about leaving my birth country even after this many years in USA and the things I love about the country I have adopted to in order to make it my home.
We went back to the French class to hear about presentations of students from 5 sections of the French. Students talked about their individual views on philosophy of life. At the end, karen and I talked about our philosophy of life ! What we find important in life !
This country has shown us kindness in so many ways ! Students have brought us food from home, given us paintings and gifts ( including the Principal). Today we went to have lunch at another teacher’s home. We have already gotten close to her as she is just the kind of teacher that we are. She is organized, firm, has high expectations from her students and extremely loving towards them. Her sweet daughter greeted us at the door and we were welcomed in the traditional way at the door with dates and milk ! Yesterday was Friday and hence we were able to enjoy the traditional couscous lunch that is a big deal in Morocco ! Khadija even let us plate the food in the way it is supposed to be served ! We had the most amazingly delicious meal together and then came the tea !!! She let me help her make tea and pour it ! It was so much fun !
Friday couscous lunch !!!! So yummy
Karen looks so happy
Later Aziz picked us up and we went for a hike to see the «akchour » fall. The drive was mind blowing in natural beauty. No photo can ever do justice to what we actually saw. We hiked for about 2 hours and then came back to Aziz’s house where a student came by to put henna on our hand !
