Day 8 (4/22): Chefchaouen, the beautiful blue city
We checked in to our pretty little hotel called "Hotel Tarek" around 9 pm. Perfect size for me with all that I need, even a tiny little "varandah". It was just pretty all around but I was too tired went to bed soon after ! Woke up this morning to the roosters !! Yes, it is true.
We were ready for work and headed to our host school, "Dhar Ben Ayad High school" with Aziz around 8:40 am. What a beautiful school and the warm welcome from all the teachers and students melted our heart. And the view !!! OMG. As soon as we entered, we saw our photos and bios were posted on the bulletin board with welcome messages. This will stay etched in my heart forever !

We observed Aziz's ESL class for 3 periods. Students are working on Unit 8 which is about "Society and social problems". Students were presenting posters on issues that they found to be a problem for the society. It was interesting to see that they are talking about topics like "contraceptives" and "domestic abuse". We thoroughly enjoyed their presentation.
We also had a formal "welcome presentation" ceremony where 2 students presented and all the staff members joined for tea and snacks.
Here people go home for the 2 hour lunch break and we went back to the hotel with tons of snacks.

We were picked up by our wonderful host Aziz and headed back to the school ! We observed science class where the teacher was talking about processing trash which included various methods of recycling. After science we had the most interesting experience at the office of the administrator. We talked about how chronic absenteeism is handled in our districts . We also discussed about social emotional issues in schools and how they are addressed in both countries. While we were in the room, a parent came to see the administration because his son was not behaving in school. Although they were speaking in Arabic, I could tell from the tone and the body language that it was incredibly respectful. I also found out 2 words that are same in Arabic and Hindi/ Bengali.
"Mushkil" - meaning "problem" - Arabic, Hindi, Bengali
"Kanoon" - meaning "law" - Arabic and Hindi

Later we went to the "weekly market" to get some groceries. The smell of fresh vegetables and herbs were amazing and so was the color !!! From there we went to the top of the mountain to get the most incredible view. We dropped off Karen as she had work to do and I went to Aziz's home with him.
We dropped off Karen as she had work to do and I went to Aziz's home with him. Met his beautiful kids, his amazing wife who fed me the most amazing dinner. The menu consisted of "salad, fried anchovies, Baysara (a soup made with beans) and homemade bread. After the wonderful dinner we took a tour of the "Blue city" !! Just mind blowing ! Came to the hotel all happy and fell asleep.
