It's tough to nerd out when you need sub plans for a non-music sub. I am fortunate to have Chromebooks in my classroom and use them for the following assignments. These assignments can be handy as sub plans. While making sub plans for non music subs don't make me want to nerd out - I have created a couple of assignments that encourage my students to nerd out while I am away.

Music Director Assignment
Students are given parameters for selecting music for their own concert program. They need to pick specific grade level music, include a ballad, and stay within a budget. Students need to listen to recordings online to determine if they like the piece and describe why they like it or how it might work for their school ensemble. I usually create a Google Form for them to complete so that I can grade easily - and sort through the music selections. Sometimes students have found some great pieces that I have missed. There have been occasions where this assignment has created monsters and the kids nerd out and start requesting pieces all year long!
Program Notes Assignment
I totally nerd out on program notes. They make every concert more enjoyable for me. Students love learning about the music they are practicing! This gives them a chance to stop, take a breath, and think about music in a different way. I have the students submit program notes in a Google Form and then hide the names while I read the notes. The best notes are included in the program. I don't do this for every concert because of time- sometimes I write the notes or I ask select students to write the notes. I do use it as a sub plan at least once a year so that all students get a chance to write. Some students totally nerd out and volunteer to write program notes for every piece we do!
All About My Instrument SLIDESHOW
Guided research to help students learn more about their instrument! Students will research instruments care, professional performers, the history of their instrument, and more! Students can be creative and dress up their slideshow or do the bare minimum and still have learned a lot more about their instrument. I got this idea from a smart friend!
LIsten To A Pro
This Google Doc guides students to listen to recordings. It gives them a reference list of quintessential performers and then guided questions.
