This Privacy Policy explains how Welcome to the Banana Hunter Project ("BananaHunter") (“the App”, “we”, “our”, or “us”) collects, uses, and protects your personal information. By using the App, you agree to the practices described here.
When you create an account, we may collect:
Name
Email address
Device UUID
Occupation (optional)
Date of birth (optional)
Gender (optional)
Phone number (optional)
You may sign up or log in using:
Google Sign-In (we receive your name, email, and profile picture from Google).
Sign in with Apple (we may receive your name and verified email from Apple) (to be implemented in 2026).
When you upload plant-related data, we collect:
Your device information (UUID) for database storing
Photos of plants (overview, male bud, fruit, pseudostem).
Notes or descriptions you provide.
Plant identification details (if given).
If you allow, we may collect your GPS location to tag your contributions.
Location is only used for mapping plant data in research and education.
You may disable location access in your device settings but doing so will not help the project grow and serve the Banana Community.
We may collect anonymised information such as:
App interactions
Device type and operating system
Crash and performance data
We use your data for the following purposes:
To create and manage your account.
To allow you to submit and view contributions.
To map and analyze plant data for research and educational purposes.
To communicate with you (e.g., updates, notifications).
To improve the App’s functionality, security, and user experience.
To comply with legal obligations and academic research ethics.
We will never share nor sell your personal data without prior consent.
However, we may share:
With researchers/partners: Aggregated, anonymized data for scientific research and publications.
With service providers: For hosting, database storage (e.g., Firebase, Google Cloud), as needed.
With legal authorities: If required by law or for safety/security reasons with approved warrant.
All data is stored securely using Firebase Firestore and Firebase Storage.
Photos and contributions are encrypted during transfer and storage.
We implement technical and organisational measures to protect your information.
Despite safeguards, no system is 100% secure; use the App at your own risk.
You have the right to:
Access and update your personal information via the Profile page.
Request deletion of your account and associated personal data. All your submitted data will be anonymised.
Withdraw location permissions at any time using location control in App.
Opt out of email notifications.
For data deletion requests, please contact us via email. Deletion process will only take place within 30 days of receiving confirmation email from us.
The App integrates with:
Firebase (Google) for authentication, database, and storage.
Google Sign-In for login.
Apple Maps / Google Maps SDK for location services.
These third parties may collect and process your information according to their own privacy policies:
The App is not directed at children under 3. If you are under 3, you may use the App only with parental or guardian consent.
User accounts are retained until you request deletion.
All data will be retained in anonymised form for research purposes, even after account deletion request.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Updates will be posted in the App. Continued use after updates means you accept the revised policy.
