In the fall of 2023, I took a class called IT 36318 Survey of Information Security, Internet Fraud, and Computer Forensics. This class was taught by Professor Shawn Golden and was a writing intensive course. For the final paper in the class, we had to write a research paper on a topic that interested us and was related to our future career goal. One day I would like to be working as a Penetration Tester or a role as a cybersecurity specialist. Therefore, I decided to write about Ransomware Mitigation and Analysis for my paper. This topic was of interest to me because ransomware is one of the threats that a cybersecurity specialist will have to handle and be aware of in their career.
Below is the full copy of the paper.
The beginning of the paper talks about the current state of ransomware. The current state of ransomware is costing over $34 million in losses of revenue to businesses. This has to be taken seriously since that number is only projected to grow in years to come. Especially, as we continue to become more dependent on the internet every day.
Next, the paper goes through the history of ransomware and what it used to be like. The first ransomware attacks were delivered by floppy disks in 1989. Then, to the early 2000s era when hackers were more interested in vandalizing websites. To today where there are many different kinds of ransomware attacks out there.
Throughout the paper, it covers the way experts are attempting to mitigate ransomware attacks. For example, the Situational Awareness Model was explained by Silva Herrera (2019). This model has three layers that are the perception, comprehension, and projection. Herrera also talked about analyzing the risk of a potential ransomware attack by using three steps prevention, detection, and prediction. Both these methods can be and should be used by companies to help avoid or mitigate ransomware attacks. Along, with many other methods described throughout the paper.
Next, there are even different services that are being offered to everyone to help mitigate ransomware attacks. For example, in my paper it covers a website called Nomoreransom.org that was created to help people affected by ransomware to decrypt their files instead of paying the ransom. There are many different products and services out now that are being offered to help people and businesses affected by ransomware.
In conclusion, my paper on Ransomware Mitigation and Analysis covers the history of ransomware all the way to the future of ransomware. It does this by going in depth about the past of ransomware, present and future of ransomware. Then, it talks about the many different approaches that are being developed to help companies and even the everyday person with ransomware attacks. While, writing this paper I learned so much about ransomware and how it is being handled today and what direction it is heading to in the future. I think this paper has tremendously grown my knowledge about ransomware mitigation and analysis.
