Phase 1 (1970) (Henry Boot)
My understanding is that this was not part of the original Garrowhill Estate and is not listed as Maxwell Land. I knew this area when I lived in Baillieston as part Barrachnie and part Burntbroom. Furthermore in older maps that show this area to the west of the Baillieston House was not named Garrowhill but Burntbroom or Barrachnie. Garrowhill brickwork was on the site, but I would say that as the bricks were stamped Garrowhill, and indeed made specifically for building the houses in Garrowhill. Why this area of land was classed as Garrowhill is incorrect, and is more likely base on choosing a name that will sell houses easier than sticking to historically correct names. Furthermore the coal mine that was there was called Barrachnie Colliery.
The name Burntbroom describes the original use of the land. The Scottish Broom tree, also called Juniper, was harvested for its berries for flavouring Gin, and Charcoal making from its wood. Broom (Juniper) wood like Hawthorn produced excellent charcoal for forging long before the days of charcoal being made from coal.
This estate was developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s
DAVID Place : HAIG Drive : JAGGER Gardens:
David H Jagger (locals pronounced it as “Jayger”) was the Construction Manager for Henry Boot during the early stages of the building of the Garrowhill Garden Estate. It was Jagger’s idea to use concrete for the roads, my father who worked on the Garrowhill Estate told me that a concrete mixer lorry was nicknamed “A Jayger of concrete”.
During the building of the Garrowhill Estate David Jagger became such a liaison officer for the residents of Garrowhill he opted to put himself up for local Councillor a was elected into office.
The following names are areas in Henry Boot’s native Yorkshire. Henry Boot must have purchased this land from The Crown Estates and when this happens the land is known as Liberty Land as it is freed from the Crown.
