Standard 5 - Instructional Delivery – The competent teacher differentiates instruction by using a variety of strategies that support critical and creative thinking, problem-solving, and continuous growth and learning. This teacher understands that the classroom is a dynamic environment requiring ongoing modification of instruction to enhance learning for each student.
My flipped lesson was done for the Technology in Education course. I chose to teach a lesson on subtracting numbers up to 10 in a world problem. I designed the lesson in a way that gave step by step instruction on how to solve these problems using screencast and powerpoint. My powerpoint included pictures to show the act of subtracting. I also created a ten question multiple choice quiz to test their knowledge. In my lesson, I made sure to add different visuals to each slide to use "strategies to maximize student attentiveness and engagement;" which meets the standard 5f. I used arrows and highlighting tools to identify specific parts of each equation. Another standard of the competent teacher that I met in my lesson was 5L, "develops a variety of clear, accurate presentations and representations of concepts, using alternative explanations to assist students’ understanding and presenting diverse perspectives to encourage critical and creative thinking;". My explanation of how to solve subtraction problems was clear and descriptive.
For the Technology in Education course, I was asked to create a Flip Quiz on the lesson I created. Since my lesson was on subtracting numbers up to 10 in a word problem, the quiz was based on this concept. Standard 5 states that, "The competent teacher differentiates instruction by using a variety of strategies that support critical and creative thinking, problem-solving, and continuous growth and learning". In this quiz, I used different types of questions to assess student understanding of the concept of subtraction. Some of the questions were word problems involving items to apply the content to real life situations. Some of the questions had to do with subtraction terminology. With word problems, students need to be able to find the key words that tell them which operation to use to solve the problem. I used this in my quiz to assess if the students are struggling with subtraction, or determining the correct operation to use.
