A Legacy of Excellence: The Journey of BAF Shaheen College Dhaka

LET US DIVE INTO THE REALMS OF THE PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE

The Noble History of BAF Shaheen College Dhaka:

Founded on March 1, 1960, BAF Shaheen College Dhaka has soared to become a beacon of educational excellence in Bangladesh. From its inception as a small school for Air Force children to its evolution into a renowned institution, its journey reflects a steadfast commitment to knowledge, growth, and holistic development.

To Begin With:

BAF Shaheen College Dhaka stands as one of the most esteemed and historic educational institutions in Bangladesh. The college began its journey on March 1, 1960, as “Shaheen School” near Tejgaon Airport in what was then East Pakistan, now Birsreshto Shaheed Jahangir Gate, Dhaka Cantonment, Dhaka. Initially established by the Pakistan Air Force as an English-medium school for the children of Air Force personnel, it introduced a Bangla medium in 1967 to cater to a broader demographic. Following the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971, the Bangladesh Air Force took over the institution, renaming it “Shaheen High School” and securing recognition from the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Dhaka.

In the academic year 1977-78, the institution was upgraded to a higher secondary college and received its current name, “BAF Shaheen College Dhaka.” The introduction of degree (pass course) classes in the 1990-91 academic year marked its evolution into a degree college, although this program was discontinued from the 2006-07 academic year. In 2006, an English version curriculum was reintroduced alongside the Bangla medium, reflecting the institution’s commitment to providing a versatile and comprehensive education.

Origins and Early Development:

The inception of Shaheen School was driven by a recognized need for an English-medium school to cater to the educational needs of the children of Air Force personnel. Group Captain Dogar, the then Base Officer-in-Command of the Pakistan Air Force, and Flight Lieutenant (Education Department) A.J.M. Khalil Ullah, who later became a respected barrister, played pivotal roles in its establishment. Sergeant Zakaria proposed the name "Shaheen," an Urdu word meaning eagle, symbolizing the lofty aspirations and vision of the institution.

Initially serving only the children of Air Force personnel, the school soon opened its doors to children from various civilian backgrounds, reflecting its growing reputation and inclusivity. The first principal, S.A. Ahmed, started with just 34 students, and classes were initially held in makeshift facilities such as the squash court, the Sergeant’s Mess, the camp mosque, and the radar building, with the principal’s office in the Civil Aviation broadcast room. The Ministry of Defense later allocated the current premises to the school, providing a stable and expansive location for its growth.

Growth and Expansion:

Different ideas and work plans for fundraising and infrastructure development began to take shape under the leadership of Lt. A.J.M. Khalil Ullah, who was wholeheartedly involved in the establishment of the school. Initially intended primarily for the children of Air Force officers and their staff, the school soon started admitting students from non-defense categories. With the growing student body, the school moved from its initial makeshift facilities to more permanent structures. The first one-storied building, located on the west of the school, served as the principal’s office and teachers’ common room, and a three-storied building was constructed for the secondary section.

Between 1994 and 1998, the college saw significant infrastructure developments with the construction of two three-story buildings. This was followed by the establishment of Shaheen Hall, a college auditorium, between 2002 and 2005. To ensure uninterrupted electricity and water supply, the college installed its own generator and deep tube well. These facilities have significantly enhanced the learning environment, allowing for a more dynamic and uninterrupted educational experience.
