PGCPS Middle School Special Programs

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a program designed for students with a minimum 2.0 grade point average (GPA) who show great promise/potential for academic excellence. Students selected for this course are expected to be enrolled in rigorous academic classes throughout the day and attend their AVID elective course every other day during their Creative Arts rotation. Unlike their other Creative Arts courses, AVID is a year-long course. In the AVID class students will learn strategies to help them achieve their goals in middle and high school by focusing on WICOR: Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading. Students will learn the Cornell and other note-taking systems, how to engage in Socratic seminars and Philosophical Chairs, time management skills, career and college preparation information and how to actively participate in AVID Tutorial or Collaborative study sessions.
