[The square knot]
Basic knot of all the sutures.
It starts with 'left over right, right over left' or 'right over left, left over right'
Let's see how it works.
[The granny knot]
This knot should always be avoided.
If you mix up with rotations, granny knot is formed and it is easily slipped loose.
[Interrupted suture]
The basic suture technique of every surgery.
Sometimes it is called simple suture, or simple loop suture.
Engage both flaps and create a tie. That's it!
[Figure eight suture]
When you have difficulty to engage the lingual flap, sometimes it is easier to approach from lingual aspect.
When suturing interdental areas, figure eight suture can be easily used.
[Horizontal internal mattress suture]
Ideal suture for everting the flaps so that the connective tissues can combine together for optimal healing.
[Vertical internal mattress suture]
Much greater everting force can be applied however it requires more freedom of flap advancement. Therefore, it requires certain skills to release the flaps.
[X suture]
Conventional suture for extraction socket.
However, I do not recommend this suture since it creates bucco-lingual contraction force and keratinized tissue can be significantly lost.
Instead, Hidden X suture is recommended.
[Modified Laurell suture]
Ultimate suture technique for everting the flaps and closing the incision line.
Two sutures are combined. Ideal for GBR areas.
[Horizontal external mattress suture]
This suture can press down the flaps and reduce the dead space.
However, the paralleled strings are not useful in clinical situations so I recommend to use Criss Cross suture below.
[Criss cross suture]
When pressing down the flaps, the crossed silks can provide single point pressure for clinical usages. Ideal for Palacci technique.
[Hidden X suture]
I have first published this suture technique in dental field for alveolar ridge preservation.
There is no bucco-lingual contraction and significantly preserve the dimension of keratinized tissue on buccal aspect.
[Miller's knot]
When tying an artery, this suture technique can provide very strong contraction force. Also very useful in daily life.
[Security loop technique]
When greater force is required to enhance the loop security, this convenient technique can be utilized. However, little practice is definitely required!
[Modification of Laurell suture]
When you better control Laurell suture, this modification can be utilized.
[Sinus Happy Alveolar Ridge Preservation (SHARP)]
ARP can significantly preserve the alveolar dimension after extraction. When used for maxillary molars, it may reduce the necessity for sinus floor elevation.
It is called SHARP technique.
[Flap Folding Suture]
Ideal suture for maximizing keratinized tissue on the buccal aspect of dental implants.
