"Will this be a free zine?"
Yes, we won't make any profit from this zine. Our only objective is to show appreciation for producers and artists from the VOCALOID community.
"Is there an estimated timeline for production / release?"
We'll start production on January 15, 2025.
As for the release date, we have decided on August 31st, 2025. We'd like artists to have around 8 months to work on their pieces so they can do so without any stress.
"How many people are you accepting for this zine?"
Considering the attention the zine has gotten, we've decided to put a limit of 150 people.
This decision was made taking into account the amount of people who have applied and the amount of producers applicants have mentioned.
If this project turns out well, we'll consider organizing a second volume to give people who don't get to participate another chance.
"How can I join collabs like this?"
For this zine you'll have to fill out an application form.
"How I'm gonna know if I'm selected for participating in the zine?"
You'll be required to write your email address on the application form. After the application period ends and we are done reviewing each form, we'll let everyone know if they got accepted via email.
"I do traditional art so are you open to that? Or is it digital art only?"
As long as you can properly scan your drawing, you can participate.
"How will the zine be made available once all art is done?"
It will have a digital release. There will be a downloadable PDF file, as well as a website so it can be read online.
"Is there an art level requirement, if so, what is expected of the artist? Will we need to provide works to get in or is it more first come first serve basis?"
There is no art level requirement and the only thing we expect from artists is responsibility. The process of assigning producers will be based neither on “skill level” or a “first come, first serve” system.
However, we will ask you to provide some examples of your work in order to know what kind of art you make.
"Will minors be allowed to participate?"
Only those who are 16 years or older by the time the zine starts will be allowed to participate.
"What socials do you need to participate?"
We will only ask participants to have a discord account. After the applications close we will ask the people who got accepted to join a discord server so we can maintain communication during the project. This way, all participants will be informed about deadlines, format requirements, extensions, etc.
The Discord server invitations will be sent via email to those who get accepted.
"Can I pick X producer?"
We'll ask artists to write the names of 1 to 3 producers they'd like to work with in their applications, these names will have to be written in order of most preferred to least preferred. If an artist has more than 3 favorite producers, they're allowed to write as many names as they want in the backups section, following the same rule as before regarding the order being based on priority.
From there, we'll carefully examine all the received applications and assign producers based on the order applicants put them in, trying our best to match every producer with the artist who “wanted them most” compared to the rest of the applicants. in other words, you'll be assigned a producer based on how much higher you put them on your list than other applicants.
We'll implement this system because we know that some producers will be highly requested due to their popularity. And because we want to keep the zine diverse and make sure that not one producer occupies more pages than others, we have decided that they won't repeat and each artist will be assigned a different one.
In other words, a producer will not be assigned to more than one single artist, even if multiple people put them as their first option in their application.
If your first option has been assigned to someone else, then we'll see if we can assign you your second, and so on. If no one else has placed the producer you wrote as your first option as high as you did, then you'll definitely have them assigned.
NOTE: we are assuming that if you write a name in your application it's because you'd like to work with said producer, even if they aren't your first option. Every name you write will be regarded as “a producer you'd be happy to work with”, so do not write more names than the ones you actually want to get assigned.
"There are some producers who have been shown to be problematic. Will they be allowed into the zine?"
We'll try to conduct as much research as possible on every producer we assign. If we find enough evidence of them being actually problematic, then they will be excluded from the zine.
However, we know that our research might not be 100% reliable due to language barriers, this is why it'll be a requirement that every artist accepts that they're responsible for supporting the producer they chose.
"Are less popular VOCALOID producers allowed?"
Absolutely! It is not important to us whether a Producer has a big following or not, we want this zine to be a tribute to as many Producers as possible.
"What will the rules regarding gore/violence/nsfw/etc be? Since some vocaloid producer's works contain these themes and topics"
We understand that many VOCALOID producers work with dark and/or NSFW themes and it is not our intention to ignore them. Therefore, this zine will not be -at least completely- SFW.
However, we will still ask artists to keep the violent and sexual content subtle and non-explicit. There'll be a limit to how much blood and nudity you'll be allowed to include in your piece, and your initial sketch will have to be checked and approved by the mods before you can proceed to work on it.
The sexualization of minors is strictly forbidden, and songs that include lyrics or imagery related to that topic will be excluded from this zine.
If you are doubtful about whether a song that treats a controversial topic with seriousness, care and/or critical intent is allowed, you can always message us and ask if an exception is possible.
"Is there a limit to the number of pages you can create and submit?"
Initially, every artist will have to draw a single page, but if they finish it before the due date ( and early enough so they have time to do another one ), they will be able to request to work on a second page dedicated to a producer that hasn't been assigned to someone else. ( 2 pages max per artist )
"Do artists have complete creative freedom or is there a specific way to draw pages planned out?"
Artists will be required to work in an A4, vertical format. They will have creative freedom when it comes to everything else (composition, amount of characters, color palette, etc.)
"Is this a general vocal synth zine or a VOCALOID one specifically?"
This zine will mainly focus on Vocalo-Ps. However, Artists who want to make pieces for producers that use other programs besides VOCALOID are more than welcome.
"Do I need to have VOCALOID fanart in my portfolio in order to apply?"
No. As long as they are made by you, feel free to put any drawings you want in the application form!
"Should I write my real name on the form or a nickname will suffice? Will the information I put on the form be publicly shared?"
A nickname will suffice! There is no need to share any personal details with us.
What you write in your form won't be shared anywhere.
"Can we draw the official mascots of VOCALOID producers instead of their real appearance?"
Of course! Artists have no obligation to draw the producers. They might do so if they want to, but they can also draw their official mascots, their characters or just the vocaloids they have used. As long as the piece is based on their work, you're fine!
Though it isn't a requirement, we highly encourage artists to take inspiration from illustrators and/or animators that have worked with their assigned producer.
"If the producer doesn't have an icon or a mascot, are we allowed to draw the vocaloids or the characters that appear in their songs instead?"
Yes! As we said before, there is no obligation to draw the producers themselves or their mascots. You can draw any characters or vocaloids that are present in their work.
"Is it okay to reference a producer's work that doesn't involve vocal synths in the art? (in a minor way, not as the main inspiration for the piece)"
It is totally okay to include references to their work that's not related to vocal synths, as long as their vocaloid work is prioritized.
"Can we draw an illustration dedicated to the production of one song?"
We expect artists to try and represent more than one song in their pieces. One song might protagonize the piece in terms of composition, but other works from the producer should be at least referenced through the use of details and/or symbols.
However, drawing a producer -or their mascot- in the stage of song production is also perfectly fine.
"Is it obligatory that the piece includes every character from every song that the producer has ever made?
Is there a limit?"
No. You don't have to draw every single one of the Producer's characters or every vocaloid they've used. As long as your piece is based on a general idea of their work, you can draw as many or as few characters as you want.
There is no limit to how many characters you can include in your piece.
"Who's ur favorite vocasynth?"
Circuit loves how Gumi's voice sounds, it makes them nostalgic. Flower is a close second tho.
Sloth loves both Kagamine Rin and Len, but has a small preference for Len. She enjoys how they sound together and the energy the songs with them have.
