And so my journey arounds this country is almost at an end – I really need a lot more than 10 weeks to explore it properly but it is what it is.
Today I am back in my home town and it was great to see all the familiar sights like the tower on Black Mountain as I flew in.
This is a relatively new city, just over 100 years old, and it sits in a teardrop-shaped island surrounded by a much larger state. The city itself is in the north-eastern corner, the rest of the space is beautiful mountains and bushlands protected by national parks. The site was chosen because of those mountains providing a permanent water source for the people who would live here in the future, and the ring of hills on the other side provided a beautiful amphitheatre for the placement of a city of national importance.
Deliberately situated halfway between Sydney and Melbourne to stop the bickering between those two cities as to which was greater as the nation grew, there were many suggestions for its name including Wheatwoolgold, Kangaemu and even Sydmeladeperbrisho. But the name eventually chosen is widely accepted as being close to the traditional Ngunnawal peoples’ word for “meeting place” and that is indeed, this town’s primary purpose. For here, all the representatives from across Australia meet to decide on the national policies and laws that be put in place to guide our country forward.
