On August 7, 2017, N.J.S.A. 9:6-8.10f, was expanded to require Child Abuse Record Information (CARI) background checks for all employees of a facility or program, licensed, contracted or regulated by DHS, or providing services with indirect State funding to provide community-based services to individuals with developmental disabilities. All regularly scheduled staff members will be required to complete both a Criminal History Record Information (CHRI) fingerprint background check (if 18 years or older) and a Child Abuse Record Information (CARI) background check (regardless of age). (c) When the sponsor submits the CARIx "CARI (Child Abuse Record Information):fee" consent forms to the Division, the sponsor shall enclose payment of $10.00 for each CARI background check, in the form of a check or money order from the center made payable to "Treasurer, State of New Jersey."

Legislation sponsored by Senators Bucco and Corrado would require all public school employees to undergo a Child Abuse Record Information (CARI) background check ( ) The New Jersey Senate passed legislation sponsored by Senator Anthony Bucco (R-25) and Senator Kristin Corrado (R-40) that would require all public school employees to undergo a Child Abuse Record Information (CARI) background check. (h) If the CARIx "CARI (Child Abuse Record Information)" background check reveals that an incident of child abusex "child abuse/neglect" and/or neglect has been substantiated against the sponsorx "sponsor:child abuse/neglect:substantiation", the Division will deny the applicationx "application:denial" or revokex "license:revocation" or refuse to renew the licensex "license:non-renewal" or Certificate of Life/Safety Approvalx "Certificate of Life/Safety Approval:removal", as applicable.

(c) When the sponsor submits the CARIx "CARI (Child Abuse Record Information):fee" consent forms to the Division, the sponsor shall enclose payment of $10.00 for each CARI background check, in the form of a check or money order from the center made payable to "Treasurer, State of New Jersey." The center may use its own discretion in offering to pay or reimburse the staff member for the cost of the CARI background check. The sponsorx "sponsor:CARI check" and each staff member shall complete a signed consent form provided by the Division that indicates the identifying information necessary to conduct a CARIx "CARI (Child Abuse Record Information)" background check, including the person's name, address, date of birth, sex, race, and Social Security numberx "Social Security number". The Child Abuse Record Information (CARI) Unit performs the background checks for child abuse/neglect for the New Jersey Department of Children and Families (DCF).
