With the advent of Big Data, different tableau uses come into place. So we decided to share answers to your question, ‘Why Use Tableau?‘ While Big Data can have a variety of definitions, a simple one is ‘Lots of Data, No Insight’. Otherwise, we’d all be talking about Actionable Data or Our Analytics Advantage. Fortunately, Tableau makes it easy to get these.
Before anything, let’s understand what is the use of Tableau. Tableau Software is a tool that helps make Big Data small, and small data insightful and actionable. The main use of tableau software is to help people see and understand their data. After 10 years of daily use of the tool, I’d say they are doing a phenomenal job. Therefore, I’d like to share the best uses of Tableau with you.
The industry, both third-party research firms and clients, seems to agree. Gartner, the leading 3rd party authority on Business Intelligence software, has placed Tableau in their “Magic Quadrant”. Tableau has been featured six years in a row. Here are the latest rankings released this past February.
And here are job trends for the different top BI software platforms out there, as measured by Indeed.com’s Job Trends (% of total job postings over time).
Why Use Tableau?
There are different tableau software uses. Tableau helps you do the following really well.
Bring Multiple Data Sources Into One Single Point Of Truth
If you have data in Excel and Access, and SQL Databases, and cloud-based applications, like Salesforce, Tableau can bring all of those together in just a few clicks. No code required. This is one of the Tableau uses that helps you see the business holistically and have one definitive source for all business reporting.
Perform Basic ETL Operations Quickly
One of the coolest Tableau uses is performing basic ETL operations fast! If you need to transform data to get it into the format you need, Tableau can do this very quickly with their automated data reshaper tool. Again, in just a few clicks, you can split fields, concatenate fields, join on concatenated or calculated fields, eliminate white space and headers, change data formats. What might take a SQL coder several minutes to write code for, or an business person using Excel a day to do, can now be done in seconds.
Provide Beautiful Dashboards And Reports
One of the uses of Tableau software that we personally love is its visual features. Visual best practices are built in, so even if your end users know little about how to present information effectively, Tableau can go a long way automatically to helping ensure reports are both informative and eye catching, and present information in an understandable way.
Conduct Investigative Or Exploratory Analysis At The Speed Of Thought
This is my favorite use of tableau. Just like athletes can get “in the zone,” Tableau enables analysts to experience a state of flow – quickly exploring their data, helping them find answers that lead to new questions which then lead to new insights as fast as they can think of them.
Automate Reporting
One of the uses of tableau software is automated reporting. You can easily build a report, then set it to point at a certain data set, have that data automatically refresh and you never have to touch it again. Set it and simply see insights and act on them. No code, no additional time, no additional meetings needed.
Control Data, Access, User Permissions, And Dashboards In A Secure And Scalable Format Both On-Premise Or In The Cloud
Tableau understands that business users need insights fast, while IT needs to ensure security, uptime, and infrastructure meets their standards. They make it easy for business users to get the insights they need, while allowing IT to meet their governance commitments.
And as a bonus, Tableau has the most engaged user community in the world. Have a question? You can find someone willing to help.

Tableau Software (/tæbˈloʊ/ tab-LOH) is an American interactive data visualization software company focused on business intelligence.[1][2] It was founded in 2003 in Mountain View, California, and is currently headquartered in Seattle, Washington.[3] In 2019 the company was acquired by Salesforce for $15.7 billion.[4][5] At the time, this was the largest acquisition by Salesforce (a leader in the CRM field) since its foundation.[6] It was later surpassed by Salesforce's acquisition of Slack.[7]
The company's founders, Christian Chabot, Pat Hanrahan and Chris Stolte, were researchers at the Department of Computer Science at Stanford University.[8] They specialized in visualization techniques for exploring and analyzing relational databases and data cubes,[9] and started the company as a commercial outlet for research at Stanford from 1999 to 2002.
Tableau products query relational databases, online analytical processing cubes, cloud databases, and spreadsheets to generate graph-type data visualizations. The software can also extract, store, and retrieve data from an in-memory data engine.
Tableau products include:[10][11]
Tableau Desktop
Tableau Server
Tableau Online
Tableau Prep Builder[12] (released in 2018)
Tableau Vizable[13] (consumer data visualization mobile app released in 2015)
Tableau Public (free to use)
Tableau Reader (free to use)
Tableau Mobile
Tableau CRM[14]
Tableau has a mapping functionality,[15] and is able to plot latitude and longitude coordinates and connect to spatial files[16] like Esri Shapefiles, KML, and GeoJSON to display custom geography.[17] The built-in geo-coding allows for administrative places (country, state/province, county/district), postal codes, US Congressional Districts, US CBSA/MSA, Area Codes, Airports, and European Union statistical areas (NUTS codes) to be mapped automatically. Geographies can be grouped to create custom territories[18] or custom geocoding used to extend existing geographic roles in the product.[19]
Tableau was founded in January 2003 by Pat Hanrahan, Christian Chabot, and Chris Stolte, and moved its headquarters to the Fremont neighborhood of Seattle, Washington, the following year.[20][21] The company has since expanded its Fremont headquarters and announced plans in 2016 for an auxiliary campus in suburban Kirkland, Washington.[22] A new headquarters building opened near Gas Works Park in Wallingford in March 2017 and was followed by a new building in
Fremont that opened in 2018.[23]
In August 2016, Tableau announced the appointment of Adam Selipsky as president and CEO, effective September 16, 2016, replacing co-founder Christian Chabot as CEO.[24]
In June 2018, Tableau acquired Empirical Systems, a Cambridge, Massachusetts based artificial intelligence startup, with plans to integrate the company's technology into the Tableau platform. Tableau also announced plans to establish an office in Cambridge as a result of the deal.[25][26]
On June 10, 2019, Tableau was acquired by Salesforce in an all-stock deal worth over $15 billion.[27]
In March 2021, Tableau announced the appointment of Mark Nelson as president and CEO, replacing Adam Selipsky.[28]
Notable Tableau employees include Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Phil Carter and computer scientist and author Leland Wilkinson.
On May 17, 2013, Tableau launched an initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange,[29] raising more than $250 million.[30] Prior to its IPO, Tableau raised over $45 million in venture capital investment from investors such as the NEA and Meritech.[30]
The company's 2013 revenue reached $232.44 million, an 82% growth over 2012's $128 million.[31] In 2010, Tableau reported revenue of $34.2 million. That figure grew to $62.4 million in 2011 and $127.7 million in 2012. Profit during the same periods came to $2.7 million, $3.4 million, and $1.6 million, respectively.[32]

On December 2, 2010, Tableau deleted WikiLeaks' visualizations about the United States diplomatic cables leak, stating it was due to direct political pressure from US Senator Joe Lieberman.[33][34]
On February 21, 2011, Tableau posted an updated data policy.[35] The accompanying blog post cited the two main changes as (1) creating a formal complaint process and (2) using freedom of speech as a guiding principle.[36] In addition, the post announced the creation of an advisory board to help the company navigate future situations that "push the boundaries" of the policy.[36] Tableau likened the new policy to the model set forth in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, and opined that under the new policy, Wikileaks' visuals would not have been removed, as "the underlying data were statistics about the cables, not the cables themselves".[37]
In 2008, Tableau was named a Codie award winner for "Best Business Intelligence Solution" by the Software and Information Industry Association.[38]
The company was recognized as a leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for nine consecutive years between 2012 and 2021.[39]
