Salvete!
My name is Carter and I am reaching out to you as this year's Arizona Junior Classical League President. The AZJCL hosts numerous events all throughout the school year for the students of the Classics. These athletic, creative, and academic activities engage every type of student and also provide them with the opportunity to meet other students of the Classics from Arizona.
Hopefully, at your school, you already have a Classics/Latin Club. If not, please reach out to me (azjclpres@gmail.com or our state chair Ms. Palumbo at arizonajuniorclassicalleague@gmail.com) about how to begin a chapter of the JCL. Having a chapter at your school is a fun way for your Classics students to enjoy a Roman potluck, create mosaics, or even play certamen, a classically themed quiz bowl. They will be able to create a community of like-minded individuals while celebrating the ancients. Students can take on a leadership role and coordinate these engaging activities and gain leadership skills for the future.
As mentioned previously, the AZJCL sponsors a number of events throughout the school year. On September 7, the yearly Salvete event will be at Gilbert Classical Academy. This morning event will be filled with classically themed activities, food, and students of the Classics from all over AZ. The Fall Forum, a one-day event at ASU sponsored by the AZJCL and the Classics Department, will happen in November. This day-long event will consist of presentations by local professors and activities hosted by the Solis Diaboli. Then, in March, our state convention will happen where schools will come together and compete in activities that challenge students creatively, academically, and athletically. Finally, there will be the National Junior Classical League Convention in July. This past summer, 1,200 JCLers from all over the US came to the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and participated in academic, graphic, and creative competitions while attending workshops, lectures, and social activities.
Not only does involvement with the Junior Classical League benefit students but it can also help create excitement about the Classics and increase enrollment in your Classics programs. We look forward to seeing you at the Salvete at Gilbert Classical. If you have questions, please feel free to email.
Valete!
Carter, 2024-2025 AZJCL President
