Awareness and Self-Preservation

Awareness & Self Preservation

The term "self defense" in modern parlance is nearly always taken to mean "fighting" or "physical violence" when, in fact, it should mean "self preservation". In other words, fighting someone who attacks you in a physically violent manner is only a small part of keeping yourself out of harm's way. Sure, it's nice to have the skills to defend yourself in a violent situation if the need arises, but it's far better never to be in that situation to begin with.

Here is an outstanding resource for understanding all facets of violence, crime, and self-defense. It is put together by someone who, apparently, spent most of his life engaging in violence until he realized how destructive it is, and started researching violence and crime. The formatting is out-dated, but the information is valuable and highly recommended.
