Yoshinkan Aikido Puget Sound

(formerly Yoshinkan Aikido Gig Harbor)

Aikido is a traditional Japanese martial art which uses unbalancing, throwing, and pinning techniques to control an opponent. Aikido is a primarily a defensive art, using circular movements to redirect the power of an opponent's attack, taking his balance and stability, and neutralizing his ability to attack further.  Once the opponent's balance and stability are compromised, he can be subdued using a variety of joint locks, pins, and throws.  In addition to its defensive uses, Aikido is a great way to get exercise, improve coordination, and learn to better handle stressful everyday situations.

We teach Yoshinkan style Aikido, which is the style of Aikido most noted for retaining its martial intent. It is one of the martial arts taught to the Tokyo Riot Police, as documented in the book "Angry White Pajamas." Yoshinkan Aikido emphasizes effectiveness of techniques for defense, and standardization of techniques for teaching purposes. The instructors teach the class in a traditional manner, including bowing, use of Japanese terminology, and a strong emphasis on proper execution of techniques.

Our dojo is closely associated with two world-class instructors, Robert Mustard Shihan (8th dan) in Burnaby, Canada, and Neil Saunders Sensei (6th dan) in Bexley, UK.
