Often, training is viewed as a one-stop-shop solution to performance issues. However, this isn't always the case. By demonstrating an understanding of this SLO, students are able to enact methods to identify human performance gaps, define a cause, and implement necessary changes to improve said performance.
Course #: MEDT 8465
Course Title: Human Performance Improvement
Description: In this assignment, we've identified a performance gap in LMS usage at one of our teammate's schools and are currently collecting data through teacher surveys, interviews with administrators, and a personal statement from a teacher at the school. From this data, we'll identify causes for the performance gap and suggest possible solutions to close the gap.
Course #: MEDT 8462
Course Title: Leading and Managing Instructional Technology Programs
Description: This assignment was part of a larger technology integration project that included writing a technology plan and a grant proposal. In this section, I conducted a needs assessment on the technology and training available from the district in order to determine possible performance gaps and find technology solutions to close them.
The HPI project was a clear choice to include in my portfolio because it directly addresses this SLO. By creating a performance issue statement, conducting research and surveys to identify a performance gap, identifying possible causes, and creating a plan to improve performance, I'm demonstrating an understanding of the process of closing human performance gaps. The Needs Assessment assignment demonstrates my ability to identify performance gaps and make suggestions to close them by conducting surveys and interviews and researching current trends to support my findings.
The group I am working with for the HPI project has been great so far. It's by far one of the more difficult assignments I've had to complete due to many factors including completing it during a summer course and learning about the concepts and processes while I'm applying them to the project. Someone in my class said the process "feels like we're building the airplane while flying it," which this is a very accurate analogy for this assignment. I also conducted the needs assessment for the second project during the summer, so the same level of intensity applied but I completed the assignment on my own. However, I feel the needs assessment was easier since I had already conducted similar studies to practice for my career transition into instructional design.
The assignments I completed to demonstrate mastery of this SLO have helped me become more confident in offering advice to employees at the company when they come to the learning and development department with a performance issue. As stated at the beginning of this page, training is not always the solution. These assignments and courses have shown me other possible reasons for performance issues, such as inadequate technology or lack of employee motivation. I feel more confident in my potential to advance in my career after completing these assignments.Â
