Title: Relative Size Reasoning in the context of Precalculus

Abstract: Measurement and measurement comparisons (e.g., fractions, ratios, quotient) are introduced to students in elementary school, however, several researchers have reported that students continue to have difficulties comparing two quantities in terms of their relative size. Relative size reasoning involves imagining one quantity’s measure in terms of another quantity’s measure and then considering this relative size measurement as the two quantities’ values change in tandem. The purpose of this presentation is to introduce relative size reasoning and report on a preservice teacher’s relative size reasoning in the context of precalculus.
