Title: International and ESL Students in classrooms – struggles and isolation

Abstract: Over the past 10 years, I have taught and observed teaching at five universities in 3 different countries: the Ukraine, Hungary and the US. Over and over again, I see international and ESL students facing many unnecessary struggles that arise from Instructors’ teaching methods. From overly complicated word problems to group work with lack of support or cultural understanding. These and other aspects of students struggles contribute to their isolation in school and their Impostor Syndrome. Awareness of these issues will help to create a supportive environment, promote diversity and inclusion in classes.
