Title: Math is Not a Spectator Sport

Abstract: Can you become proficient in a game, sport, or activity just by watching someone else do it? Many classes in mathematics have long been taught with teachers giving direct instruction and students silently and ferociously writing down copious amounts of notes. There is nothing wrong with lecturing for some students, but does this reach as many of your students as you intended? Can you still get through the quantity or quality of material if you are not giving direct instruction every day? What does active learning mean for mathematics? These are some of the questions that we will discuss.

This session will be interactive, involving current research on best practices for teaching and learning mathematics AND of course we are going to do some math! Come play a fun interesting math game called trash ball and learn about other interactive methods to use in any math class. See you at Math is not a Spectator Sport.
