New York City and New York State have both OpenData initiatives, which host on public websites their institutional data sets. In particular, yearly water use for NYC are disclosed. The OpenData platform is equipped with visualization tools. These step-by-step instructions guide the students through the visualization of the data, in particular in a box plot (in accordance with Regents math requirements) and linear regression.
Find here a brief in class activity related to NYC regents labs at the High School level. We make use of the IUCN Red List website, which hosts up-to-date animal species status.
The students are invited to relate what they learned about evolution through Darwin's observations of finches' beaks, with the water environment and human threats that are challenging their population numbers.
