What is a General Affidavit?

A general affidavit is a written statement that is sworn to be true and provides specific reasons for a request to a judge. It is required when a court is asked for "extraordinary" relief, such as removing someone from a home or protecting children from an abusive parent. 

An affidavit is a legally binding document that can be used in a variety of legal proceedings, including: Court proceedings, Family law and estate planning, Name changes, Bankruptcies, and Divorce proceedings. 

Here are some tips for writing an affidavit: Speak in the first person, Remain concise, Restate your claims, Notarize your affidavit, and Verify that your information is true. 

Affidavits are different from sworn oaths because the relevant parties sign them instead of swearing them out loud.
