It started with heart...

At Avoyelles Animal Welfare Society (AAWS), we're more than just a shelter. We are a safe haven. We are a second chance. We are a voice for the voiceless.

Founded in 2007, with a deep love for animals and a commitment to serving our rural community, AAWS is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the rescue, care, and rehoming of abandoned, neglected, and homeless animals throughout Avoyelles Parish and surrounding areas. Whatever situation we face, we work tirelessly to make sure every animal receives the dignity, care, and love they deserve.  In the year 2012, we were able to construct a small facility in Cottonport, Louisiana and expanded our ability to help animals in desperate need. In the years since our shelter has opened, we have cared for over 800 animals of Avoyelles Parish and surrounding areas.  In June 2025, a new board of directors stepped up to the plate to grow the vision while honoring the legacy that is AAWS. Our hope is to expand operations through collaboration and teamwork. Part of that mission is not only physically care for the animals, but to also foster change in the community by reinforcing responsible pet ownership by education, and advocating for animal welfare. 

We collaborate with other rescue organizations, local community groups, and animal lovers to assist with housing & caring for animals whenever possible. We believe that a collaborative approach to animal rescue yields higher happy tails. Additionally, we support our local schools, 4-H clubs, and other organizations to educate and enrich the youth on responsible animal care and pet ownership.

To rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome animals in need while promoting responsible pet ownership and improving animal welfare across Avoyelles Parish.
