Aveum is a student-led, undergraduate academic journal, affiliated with Saint Louis University–Madrid and Missouri. Founded in Spring 2024. The journal will feature both articles written by undergraduates with the oversight of the history faculty here at SLU-Madrid as well as articles written by our faculty.
The Aevum mission is three fold:
Writing: to provide a venue for history majors and other interested students to publish and share their research and to carry out research projects of interest to them.
Skills and work experience: to provide an unpaid work experience for students to gain experience both in writing and publishing, website building, project management, that can then serve as demonstrable evidence of their experience as they enter the workforce or apply to graduate school.
Department growth: to create a concrete project, beyond course work, to promote history as a discipline and the humanities at SLU Madrid.
The idea to use the word Aevum comes from the Stoic philosopher Lucius Annaeus Seneca, more commonly referred to as Seneca, who lived in ancient Rome. The word itself, Aevum, as used by Seneca means "all past time."
“Nullo nobis saeculo interdictum est, in omnia admittimur” [from no age are we shut out, we have access to all ages] Seneca, De Brevitate vitae.
Our slogan is the foundation of the journal. Aevum will provide the opportunity for students and faculty alike to research into every age of history, every possible micro-history and bring it to live within their articles.
