AVEBURY is a UNESCO World Heritage Site steeped in history, intrigue and controversy. It contains a remarkable group of prehistoric monuments which includes a Henge and stone circles, avenues of standing stones, the Sanctuary, the long barrows and Silbury and Windmill Hills. Many of these monuments date from the Neolithic period 5,500 to 4,000 years ago. Avebury village evolved in and around the site. The village has a church with Saxon and Norman features, cottages of many periods and two manor houses - all within a chalk downland setting of great beauty close to the source of the River Kennet in Wiltshire.
