I completed service-learning with The Ritter Center in San Rafael, CA during my second semester of my freshman year through my Ethics of Housing and Homelessness Course. My tasks as a service-learner in the community was to provide nutritious foods and basic resources to the precariously housed and homeless. The Ritter Center has allowed me to form connections and develop new understandings about the inequities faced by single mothers residing in the Canal Community. This experience has inspired me to explore progressive solutions to change our policies and improve female-headed families quality of life and opportunities for advancement. My role and responsibility for social justice is to be an advocate and a voice for my fellow community members who struggle financially due to the oppressive barriers in place. I have learned that to make permanent change there needs to be more money allocated for the development of affordable housing. Without housing, people are not able to perform basic elemental functions which in turn prohibits them from having a flourishing life.
