My participation in the Peabody Institute’s Vocal Performance Academy has been one of the most transformative experiences in my musical journey. Selected as one of only eight students nationwide, I have had the privilege of studying under renowned instructors and collaborating with other talented young vocalists. Last year, we presented a lieder recital, where I performed Liebst du um Schönheit by Clara Schumann and Der Sandmann by Robert Schumann. Immersing myself in the German lieder tradition, I developed a deeper appreciation for the intricate interplay between poetry and music, which has profoundly shaped my approach to vocal expression and storytelling.
This year, our recital, titled Vienna, City of Dreams, explores Viennese operettas, art songs, and theatrical pieces. Studying the repertoire of Vienna’s rich musical tradition—ranging from duets to trios—has been both challenging and exhilarating, allowing me to broaden my versatility as a performer. The collaborative nature of this program has fostered a sense of camaraderie with my fellow vocalists and has deepened my understanding of classical music as an art form that connects us across time and culture.
In addition to my work with the Peabody Institute, I was honored to be invited to perform at the Boston Conservatory’s Vocal/Choral Intensive (VCI) in Summer 2023, where I sang Allerseelen by Richard Strauss. Meeting students from across the country and the world, all with a shared passion for classical vocal performance, was incredibly enriching. The opportunity to learn from their diverse experiences and perspectives broadened my understanding of the global nature of music.
Most recently, I was invited to perform at Tanglewood in Summer 2024. These experiences have solidified my dedication to classical vocal performance, instilling in me a deep appreciation for the tradition and a commitment to sharing its beauty with others. They have also reinforced my belief in the power of music to inspire, connect, and transcend boundaries.
Participating in Model United Nations has not only been an enriching academic experience but also an incredible opportunity to connect with students from around the globe. Traveling to Boston for two consecutive years to attend Harvard Model UN allowed me to engage with peers from Venezuela, Brazil, Greece, Italy, and many other countries. These interactions extended beyond committee sessions, fostering friendships and cultural exchanges that enriched my understanding of global perspectives.
Discussing international issues with such a diverse group of delegates deepened my appreciation for the interconnectedness of our world and the importance of collaboration in solving complex challenges. These travel experiences have not only enhanced my skills in diplomacy and negotiation but also strengthened my commitment to fostering cross-cultural understanding and advocacy in my academic and professional pursuits.
