The workshop aims to create an initial teleoperation framework that maps edge-case road scenarios to teleoperation paradigms based on the human actors who might be involved in the scenario. Such an approach considers that not only the RO but also passengers, police officers, other drivers, or guard compounds can intelligently contribute to resolving problematic issues. Additionally, the resolution of various edge cases might depend on the affected human actors. Following the initial establishment of the framework, novel human-AV interaction methods will be explored.

First, participants will be introduced to tele-driving and tele-assistance teleoperation paradigms. Each mode has advantages and disadvantages and may be preferable in certain scenarios. For instance, entering a busy junction using a steering wheel and pedals might be better than using high-level guidance. However, this may not hold true with high network latency or low situational awareness of the RO.
Then, we will overview other potential actors in teleoperation sessions. AV passengers may assist the RO in some scenarios, while additional actors could be included in other decision processes. We aim to address the impact of different interaction concepts on other road users from a safety-related perspective (e.g., distance from a teleoperated AV crossing lanes) or a social perspective (e.g., a delivery AV approaching vulnerable road users aggressively). After introducing the framework, participants will be divided into groups. In the first breakout session, participants will describe the challenges of different scenarios (see Figure above) and decide which mode of operation is the most suitable for each scenario. Each group will present their insights at the session’s end.
In the second breakout session, participants will design novel interaction paradigms and experimental plans to resolve the scenarios revealed in the first session. They will present their design suggestions, followed by a final discussion.
