Important Information about Application for Collaborative Research Workshop

Due to this workshop's goal of facilitating longer-term increases in diversity in this research community's collaborations, applicants to the collaborative workshop will be encouraged to answer at least one of several optional questions about collaboration and diversity, in addition to the conventional questions asked on a workshop application form. Examples of these questions, which are designed to lead applicants to pause and reflect on relevant issues, include:

  • While diverse collaborations can lead to innovations, they can also prove to be challenging in ways that homogeneous collaborations are not. How do you (or how might you) handle differences in style, priorities, culture, etc that arise when you are collaborating?

  • The goal is to have projects where everyone brings significant skills and background to the table. Nevertheless, it can happen that some collaborators, especially more senior ones, have more substantial background than others. How do you handle this situation?

  • Have you participated in a collaborative research workshop before? If so, describe your experience. Are there aspects you would like to replicate or discard?

Together with mathematical expertise, willingness to reflect on team dynamics and strengths plays a strong, positive role in the formation of fruitful, enduring collaborations and networks. Thus, applications that include an answer to at least one of these questions will be viewed favorably.
