The Hartlands is a delightful Victorian holiday centre situated in Shanklin on the south coast of the beautiful and tranquil Isle of Wight.
The centre has been designed by Colin & Elaine with help from leading specialist Dr Viv Hinchcliffe to provide self catering accommodation and facilities to support families, schools and care homes with members of any age on the Autistic Spectrum. For a holiday where Autism is understood and catered for.
The Hartlands now owned by the SpectrumBreaks project has undergone a major refit. Completing in October 2016 the centre now provides accommodation and facilities to support families, schools and care homes with members of any age on the Autistic Spectrum. Facilities include Indoor Hydro Swimming Pool, Cinema, IT Room, Activity & Sensory Room, Relaxing Area, Games Room, Art Room, Gymnasium and Sauna.
We welcome guests with a learning disability, or those with an autistic spectrum disorder. We are listed on the National Autistic Society website as an "autism friendly venue".
We have a son who is on the autistic spectrum, has a learning disability and epilepsy. We know how hard it can be to find a suitable holiday to accommodate the needs of everyone in the family. If you have particular requirements, we will try to meet them. We understand that you want to have a relaxing time on holiday and we will do our best to help you achieve this. Michael and Marina live on site at Well Farm and are on hand to help if needed.
We can advise you about each individual property, its layout and suitability if required. Access statements are available for our properties on request. We hope you’ve just found your perfect holiday destination – choose one of our five cottages, each with their own individual style, or our glamping pods.
The Bruce Branch of the Kennet and Avon Canal Trust offers affordable canal holidays to disabled, disadvantaged or older people – along with their family, friends or carers. Our purpose-built, wheel-chair-accessible boats are based at Great Bedwyn Wharf, near Hungerford. We’re ideally situated for a pleasant cruise east towards Hungerford, Newbury and Reading, or westward through Bruce Tunnel and Honeystreet and on to the Caen Hill Flight at Devizes.
The boats are available for weekly hire for self-catering, self-steer holidays. We ask that the Team Leader for your group has had at least one week of previous canal boat experience – otherwise we ask you to join us on one of our training weekends in the Spring. We also offer day trips, crewed by our voluntary helpers, when we have a boat available.
The Bruce Branch has a fleet of four wide-beam boats. Hannah sleeps 12, Rebecca and Diana 10, and Rachel six. Each boat has the highest quality accommodation and the ultimate flexibility for people with a wide variety of special needs. They all have a fully equipped galley with cooker and fridge, microwave, central heating and flushing toilet. The extra width of the boats provides excellent manoeuvrability for wheelchair users and they have all been designed to give wheelchair users the opportunity to steer by using the tiller.
We also have a narrow-beam boat, Lady Hilda, which sleeps eight. Lady Hilda is available for hire by community groups.
Welcome to our luxury log cabins, glamping pods and adventure activities on our ex-dairy farm on the edge of the beautiful Somerset Levels set in the beautiful countryside.
Wall Eden Farm welcomes families travelling with Autism and other disabilities and we have wheelchair accessibility.
Andrew, the owner, was awarded the learning Skills Award for the South West of England 2010, for work helping others with disabilities. We have lots of resources including outdoor activity instructors, wildlife enthusiasts, historical and Archaeological guides and so much more.
We keep a few sheep and chickens and occasionally rear calves. This small scale farming integrates well with the relaxed approach to holidaying in Somerset and many people enjoy finding out more about our farm and of course, we’re always happy to explain or invite people to take part if they wish. We are perfect for group bookings, families and couples looking for something special and truly unique.
At Cwmcrwth Farm we aim to offer autism friendly holidays to families with children and adults on the autism spectrum. We regularly host families with a wide selection of learning disabilities and autism. Including ADHD and Aspergers syndrome, children who attend special schools and adults living in supported housing.
What all the families have in common is a wish for a relaxed holiday for ALL the family. We understand parents find it a challenge to find family friendly and autism friendly holidays to suit everyone’s needs. Often parents feel on edge not wanting to be judged by others, not wanting to let their children down and hoping everything will be perfect. We can’t promise perfection but we will do our best!
Our small farm in a quiet rural location is ideal for children and adults with autism. There is no constant background noise and no loud noise. We have lots of outdoors space to let off steam and friendly animals to visit whenever you wish. As we only have 3 cottages, there are never more than 12 other guests in addition to your family group.
Our ethos is very relaxed and we do our best to support families.
National Autistic Society's 'Autism Friendly Award'
We are trying to create a wonderful holiday environment for families with young children and those with autism like ours. We can offer up to 4 ready pitched bell tents and 2 safari tents for the 2018 summer season. These luxury tents will have beds and bedding for the family, all ready and waiting for you. Taking the stress out of tent pitching while watching the children.
We hope our developing garden area will help to maintain a relaxed and calm state of mind. We also have miniature horses which would love to meet you and be your friend. Our family toilet facilities will give privacy to help with the toileting needs of older children that may not be continent yet. Our showers for the bell tents also offer a relaxing sensory experience with colour changing lights in the shower head.
We have laundry facilities and plenty of spare bedding on site if needed. We have established a very basic sensory play room in the stable block, giving a place to chill and relax. The safari lodges have cubby play areas which can act as a chill out area for children within these tents. We have hedging and fencing all around our glamping field and our front gates are kept locked (you are issued a key on arrival) the aim is to help families to keep track of children that wonder/run and slow them down, giving parents a chance to catch up.
We can offer advice on local attractions and activities that are suitable and of interest to children with autism and their siblings. We appreciate that Autism is different for each individual and are happy to adapt and help were we can to enable your whole family to have a truly relaxing time.
Working Farm Holiday Cottages In the heart of Rural WALES
Children can farm with us for real and play all day, while parents relax and enjoy their own holiday. We also organise several sports activities including cycling, walking and horse riding.
Over the years we have been host and hostess to innumerable children, some of whom have special needs for different reasons and to varying degrees including challenging behaviour, but rest assured that they are always welcome here and we will do our utmost to ensure that they and their parents can enjoy their holiday.
What goes for children also goes for adults. To be accepted by other people and to be able to mingle with them, farming with them and socializing with them in the Club House or by the general BBQ or for an EASTER, XMAS or NEW YEAR celebration, could recharge them with confidence and make them very happy for a long time.

This may be a adult with a disability coming with their partner and children, or a child with a disability coming with adult family members and siblings. Irrespective of how your Family group is made up, you are here to have challenging and adventurous fun together while also socialising with other children and adults in a safe and supportive environment. Our main centre, which also houses all our catered accommodation and hydrotherapy pool, is fully accessible throughout via a combination of ramps and lifts.
We can take up to 60 residents at any one time with us able to cater for profound and complex disabilities. Our rooms are mainly twins, with some larger rooms available on request or for use by larger groups,
We take safeguarding issues very seriously, so our accommodation is over 3 separate areas, the Farmhouse, the Lower Byre and the Upper Byre, with each of these split down into 2 lockable corridors. This enables larger groups to have their own areas of accommodation areas not used by other residents.
Our bedrooms are all en-suite with level entry wet-room and toilet facilities. A number of the bedrooms also feature electric raisable beds which can be allocated if required. In rooms we can also place portable electric hoists, free-standing shower-chairs and medical fridges, with our intention being that with the exception of wheelchairs*, you don’t need to bring any specialist equipment.
Awarded the National Autistic Society Autism Friendly Award! Supporting Children with Autism on holidays. 2018
At North Hayne Farm, we continue to work to create an Autism friendly environment . Our aim is to provide inclusive farm holidays , where individual needs can be met and families always feel welcome.
Disruptions to normal routines can often result in more behavioural issues and we recognise that it can be stressful for many children (and their parents/carers) when they are away from their usual routine and familiar home environment. We would therefore encourage you to contact us prior to arrival to discuss any specific needs your child/children may have.
If your child has sensory difficulties such as sensitivity to loud noises, it may be necessary to come down to farm feeding sessions slightly earlier or slightly later so that noise factors can be reduced. It may also be helpful to enjoy the morning donkey ride at the end of the morning session when it is quieter at the barns.
Our twice daily animal feeding routine is purposely structured (farm staff will use signing to help with this if required). This is to provide a constant framework for all our younger visitors, helping them to feel secure and more confident. We do recognise however, that waiting in a queue for their bucket of ‘feed’, taking turns or sharing may be particularly challenging. Please have a word with us if you think there is something extra we may be able to do which will help.

Sonny’s Sensory Room is furnished with bright and tactile equipment to provide a stimulating setting in an environment that is safe for youngsters.
The space is equipped with brightly lit bubble tubes, sensory wall art, a star cloth and changing lights, multi-coloured flooring, bean bags, rollers and gym balls. A second room provides a quiet setting where parents can relax or calm youngsters who become distressed.
Says Allan, “As a parent of a child with autism I see the wonderful benefits a sensory room provides. Going on holiday can be a scary experience for people with autism, ADHD or Asperger’s syndrome and the transition from home to a new environment causes lots of anxiety, so having a safe and calming place helps to ease their worries.

The Newman Holiday Trust is a voluntary organisation which provides summer holidays for children with special needs.
Established in 1981, the Newman Holiday Trust provides holidays for over 140 children with disabilities and special needs aged 4-16 each year, in various locations around the United Kingdom.
Due to the high level of skilled care they require or financial circumstances, the children selected for these breaks would often not otherwise receive a holiday. We run week long residential holidays providing a range of fun activities in a safe and supported environment and use a care ratio of one helper to one child at all times.
We are an entirely volunteer run charity, rated "Outstanding" by Ofsted, and are committed to providing fantastic holidays for all the children we take. Please see our website at www.newmantrust.org for more details.
