Students will discuss with you a mutually agreeable schedule.
- block placements are 35 hours/ week
- part time placememts are 10-15 hours/week depending on placement course house
Students get a ½ hour for lunch and up to two 15-minute breaks included in the above hours.
Students will bring hour sheets for supervisors to sign and verify.
**The student is required to inform the college and placement site of their absence, in advance of the missed day/time.
Hour Requirements:
Placement I: 140 hours
Placement II: 210 hours
There may be extenuating circumstances that warrant absence from the placement site. These reasons include (but are not limited to): illness, agency/college strike, snow day, death/serious illness in the family, placement site is closed, doctor or counsellor’s appointment.
*In the case of a transit strike, students are still expected to arrive to their placement site
The following steps should be taken when missing time from a placement:
1. If the placement site is close, the student should not attend placement for that day or for the time that the placement site is closed.
2. If it is unsafe to drive and the student is at risk, it is advised that the student reassess the situation once the snow plows have come, and attend placement once it is safe.
3. The student will call or email their college supervisor and on-site supervisor to inform them (unless the college supervisor and/or agency supervisor has already sent out an announcement for the day).
Students are expected to make-up missed hours. This may be done by completing work for the placement site and/or child from home, or working extra hours throughout the placement period. Make-up hours can be counted on the daily placement hour worksheet, and can include any work completed especially for the placement site (i.e., visuals, PECS, handouts, resources, etc.). How missed hours are made up should be a discussion between the student and the field placemen site.
Any assignments that are completed for the college course, and are not for the placement site, cannot be counted. Assignments created for the college course and will be left with the placement site can be counted.
The allowable missed placement hours are as follows. The missed hours MUST be approved by the college and agency supervisor, and documentation may be required:
1. Under 10 hours– these hours can be made up before and after the typical placement day
2. 10-19 hours– With approval, these hours can be made up with additional time spent on placement and/or additional assignment may be completed. This may require medical documentation and is subject to the discretion of the college supervisor.
3. Over 19 hours– the student may fail the placement and be required to re-apply to the program. Progression is on a case-by-case basis and is subject to approval by the program coordinator
