My current work in progress (WIP) is a fantasy romance novel called A DEATH OF SHADOWS.
This is my fourth novel, but the first that I plan to query to agents. It is entering its final editing phase with the goal of send out to agents in the fall of 2026.
Struggling historian Ali Baas comes to London to win a grant that will finally add some stability to her future. She has one leg up on the competition: the ability to speak to ghosts. But during a late-night research session in a graveyard, she is attacked by something that is decidedly not the incorporeal dead. Saved by a cat named Dante, he informs her that she is being targeted by a creature from the Below—a supernatural otherworld paralleling her own.
Dante is a guardian of the Below, and for years, he has been hunting the fae that now stalks Ali. He knows that to get close to his quarry he must get close to Ali, but he cannot access his full powers in the Above. He expects Ali to be nothing more than bait in a trap. He does not expect to find her so charming. Between protecting her and hunting the enemy, his feelings bloom into something that might put his plans, and his home in the Below, in jeopardy.
Together, they trace the enemy’s hideout to a magically locked mausoleum that only the owner may open, and Ali must search for the ghost whose body lies within to unlock it. Through a supernatural auction house, a ballroom of dreams, and the thirteen layers of Hel, Ali and Dante team up to stop the fae that becomes stronger every day. But when Ali discovers that she is descended from the Below, and that Dante might have a more intimate connection to her stalker than he let on, she will have to decide if trusting him with her life will save her or only lead her closer to death.
Complete at 100k words, A DEATH OF SHADOWS is a duel POV Fantasy Romance set in London, England and the magical world of the Below. It will appeal to readers of Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett and Throne of the Fallen by Kerri Maniscalco. It is a standalone with series potential.
