The goal of the Auguste lab is to study ecology, evolution, transmission dynamics, pathogenesis, and interventions for arthropod-borne viruses. Our research has focused on a central theme, which is to understand the ecological and evolutionary factors that influence the emergence of arboviruses and develop appropriate intervention strategies for important arboviral agents.
Topics of Research Include: Arbovirus surveillance; Characterization of novel viruses from mosquitoes; Elucidating the mechanism by which insect-specific flaviviruses are host-restricted; Phylogenetic studies to understand the evolution and spread of viruses; Elucidating the mechanisms by which insect-specific viruses preclude super-infection of pathogenic flaviviruses in vivo; Developing antivirals and vaccines for re-emerging arboviruses.
