One of our goals through our meetings is to educate our members on what it takes to get into vet school. We walk through what the vet school application process entails such as test taking, experience hours, and interview preparation. We aim to provide first-person insight to the wide array of career pathways one can pursue once obtaining a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine and research opportunities within the field. In addition to this, we provide students with opportunities to begin accumulating those experience hours via volunteer opportunities and help to set students up for a successful application cycle with academic resources.
Each semester the PVMA has several service dates where students can experience different aspects of the veterinary field while also gaining some hands-on experience with various animals. One of the major ones is our annual attendance to the APVMA Symposium! Some local examples include: K-911, the Southeastern Raptor Center, a raptor rehabilitation center, animal handling labs with AUCVM, and more. One noteworthy service event is an outing at Storybook Farm Inc., an organization that provides equine assisted activities for children experiencing physical, mental, social and emotional challenges. We also host several social events throughout the semester, such as benefits at local restaurants and even pumpkin painting!Â
We encourage the building of lasting friendships and the creation of connections that persist not only through the years of undergrad, but into veterinary school and all the career opportunities in the future. We foster these connections by lifting each other up and helping each other where we are able to.
