I've been providing care as a sports medicine professional for years, and have worked with athletes at all levels. Being an athlete myself, I wanted to stay close to sport as long as I could. I've worked with sports ranging from football and basketball, to rugby, ultimate frisbee, beach volleyball, figure skating and rodeo.
I've also had opportunities to see where our current medical system is failing us. If a youth football kid gets a head injury, they may sit in the hospital waiting room for hours to be seen. In the end, they're told "you have a concussion, have a nice day." But what are you supposed to do next!? You need a concussion specialist.
Those who have ever had a concussion know, it can be a very lonely road. You don't have to wear a sling, and you're not limping. By anyone's observation, you "seem fine" and are just trying to avoid working hard. The truth is, you may be far from "fine." The other truth is, others may not listen to you because you "seem fine."
It's unacceptable that anyone should experience this. With how connected our world is, the most current information can and should be made available the moment it's needed. Confusion about recovery, hardship related to time away from school, or learning how to navigate their commitments alone should be in the past.
AthletIQ is my contribution to a new wave of medical care that is coming. One that provides easier access to care, and prioritzes people and their health.
