Turn on the Livescribe Pen by clicking the power button, and sync it to the special notebook paper you'll be using to take notes by clicking one of two icons (shown below) on the first page depending on what type of LiveScribe Pen you are using. For my assistive technology demonstration, I used the Echo II.
This is the easy part...attend class and take notes like you would with any other pen and paper!
In the bottom left corner of each page, there are icons to indicate whether you want to record, pause, or stop. When you select any of these icons with your pen, the pen registers accordingly. This is helpful if there are breaks during class, class discussions, or unanticipated interruptions in class. The pen will automatically pick up where you left off when you click on the "record" icon again.
3. Download the Livescribe+ Desktop App on your phone and computer.
4. Connect your pen to your computer using a USB port.
5. After a few minutes, the content that is saved on the pen will be uploaded to the computer.
Charge the pen for the next class, then turn it off by holding the power button.
This picture shows what the recorded handwriting looks like when you are actively taking notes and is called "Pencast" in the App. The first several lines are in dark green and the rest of the writing is in light green.
As you listen to the recording of the lecture, the writing gradually changes color so you can follow along with your written notes while simultaneously listening to the audio.
The Pencast feature also allows you to skip to a certain place in the lecture by clicking on the page and the writing you want to listen to.
One feature of the pen is that it transforms your handwriting into a typed font. On the left-hand side, are chunks of my handwriting. On the right-hand side are mini tables with the following information:
The notebook associated with the page
The page the notes are on
The date and time that section of text was written
I attended class on Thurs., March 7th from 1:15 pm - 2:30 pm. The dates and times in this software are formatted as 07/03/2024 13:28
The typed version of your handwriting including symbols such as parentheses and dashes
A student can also search for keywords by clicking "Search Feed" in the top right-hand corner of the desktop app. I searched for the word "Sleep" and that produced 3 results (shown below). I then searched "memory" and that brought up 16 results. Since the unit JM covered during this class was about memory, it makes sense that more results came up when I conducted the keyword search a second time.
