Almost immediately after completing their latest full-length, Malpracticioner, RVA-based collective mixed bag of mathcore, shoegaze, noise, and alternative rock, Asylum 213, recorded a brand new single with James Ferrell of The Welcoming at his Mountainsize Audio recording studio in Asheville, NC, which was released on February 13, 2025.
“Prolonged Exposure to Delusion” details the vivid emotional ups and downs one goes through in recovery. It speaks on what it’s truly like to break free of the shackles of deception, doubt, self-depreciation and other negative feelings or unhealthy distractions that shadow one’s authentic self. It’s not always fun to sit with yourself and really sort out what you see in the mirror, but be it to escape those causing you harm, or to discontinue harm upon yourself, or both? It is an important step to take in a long road of healing.
Given the many ups and downs experienced by the band themselves, individually and collectively, over our now 6-year tenure as a full band – this one feels personal. No matter how much we, as a band, can define our relations to the meaning behind these lyrics, however, it all remains open to interpretation for each and every listener. You have your own story, your own journey you’re going through, let this song be nothing more than a reminder that the peace you’ll find at the end of that journey is worth every step you continue to take to get there.
Asylum 213 present what they believe only further reflects the band at its pinnacle point. Working with James was like a dream come true, with his production work seeming to build this sort of translation arc of taking what the band and their instruments had to say and converting it into exactly the kind of audible force they intended it to be. Ferrell’s tireless work only furthers the magnitude of the massive sound Asylum 213 has established for themselves, and it is without question that the band intends to work more with him in the near future. But for now? Have a small taste of what’s to come in the future, experiencing a visceral, high-powered tidal wave of what four friends who have bonded like family in the last year especially have going on lately. We love you and we hope this song recharges your heart even where virtually everything sucks right now. ❤️
““Prolonged Exposure to Delusion” is a masterclass in controlled chaos. The band seamlessly blends elements of mathcore, shoegaze, noise rock, and alternative rock, constructing a soundscape that feels both sprawling and claustrophobic. The shifting time signatures and dissonant guitar work create an unsettling atmosphere, mirroring the emotional turmoil depicted in the lyrics. As the track builds, the contrast between the crushing heaviness and atmospheric, almost ethereal passages adds an emotional weight that refuses to be ignored. ” - Music Earshot, 2025 4
