Inauguration of ASM Student Chapter IU and Microbiology Quiz Competition
The American Society for Microbiology (ASM) chapter at Islamic University (IU) was inaugurated on October 5, alongside a microbiology quiz competition at the M.A. Wazed Miah Building. The event was led by Prof. Dr. Minnatul Karim and attended by IU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Nakib Muhammad Nasrullah, along with other distinguished guests.ย
Students from the Faculty of Biological Sciences participated in the quiz, where Shaila Akter Tumpa won, and Amin Khan Shuvo and Farhad Alam were runners-up. Winners received crests and certificates.ย
Prof. Dr. Rezuanul Islam emphasized the importance of microbiology and the ASM chapterโs role in enhancing academic and research opportunities at IU.
World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week observed at Islamic University
A vibrant rally was organized by the ๐๐๐ ๐๐ญ๐ฎ๐๐๐ง๐ญ ๐๐ก๐๐ฉ๐ญ๐๐ซ ๐๐ at Islamic University, Kushtia to spread awareness against Anti-Microbial Resistance. The event brought together students from the Biological Faculty and esteemed teachers, aiming to raise awareness about the global challenge of antimicrobial resistance and the need for urgent action.
Following the rally, impactful speeches were delivered by the respected faculty members. Their words highlighted the critical role of education, research, and responsible antibiotic use in combating AMR.

The training session was led by the esteemed ๐๐. ๐๐ก๐๐ฆ๐ข๐ง๐ฎ๐ซ ๐๐๐ก๐ฆ๐๐ง, ๐๐๐๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐๐ซ, ๐๐๐ฉ๐๐ซ๐ญ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ ๐จ๐ ๐๐ข๐๐ซ๐จ๐๐ข๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ ๐ฒ, ๐๐๐ฌ๐ก๐จ๐ซ๐ ๐๐ง๐ข๐ฏ๐๐ซ๐ฌ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐จ๐ ๐๐๐ข๐๐ง๐๐ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐๐๐ก๐ง๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ ๐ฒ. He conducted the training session beautifully with the insights on the basics of Next Generation Genomics and guided the participants for further knowledge.ย
The second day was conducted by our honourable Trainer ๐๐ฉ๐จ๐ง ๐๐ก๐๐ง๐๐ซ๐ ๐๐๐ฎ๐ฅ, who started with a theoretical approach towards Drug Design and Molecular Docking followed by Hands on Training. It was overall a great session paving a way to the participants for further research and development.
Thalassemia Awareness and Screening
The Thalassemia Awareness & Screening Campaign was held on *January 25, 2025, at Islamic University, Kushtia, making it the first university in the Khulna division to organize such an event. The seminar and free screening program were jointly organised by BioTED and the American Society for Microbiology Student Chapter, Islamic University, Kushtia.ย ย
The event was attended by Vice-Chancellor Professor Nokib Muhammad Nasrullah as the chief guest and Treasurer Professor Muhammad Jahangir Alam as a special guest. Professor A.K.M. Nazmul Huda, Chairman of the Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, presided over the seminar, while Professor Mohammad Minnatul Karim moderated the session. More than 200 students and faculty members participated in the awareness seminar.ย ย
The keynote speaker, Dr. Muhammad Sawgatul Islam, Executive Director of BioTED, highlighted the importance of thalassemia prevention and engaged in discussions with students and faculty members.ย
Following the seminar, a free thalassemia screening camp was conducted, where around 200 students and teachers participated. Among similar programs held across the country, the Islamic University Kushtia event was noted as the largest and most successful.ย ย
Special gratitude was expressed to Professor Mohammad Minnatul Karim, whose guidance was crucial in organizing the event. The American Society for Microbiology Kushtia Chapter, led by President Shovon Shaha and Secretary Abu Reza, was also appreciated for their contributions and active participation in making the event a success.
