Association of Shotokan Karate (ASK) Participation Waiver

Introduction

This Participation Waiver is designed for students registering with the Association of Shotokan Karate (ASK). By signing this document, you acknowledge the inherent risks of martial arts training and agree to the terms of participation.

1. Assumption of Risk

I understand that Shotokan Karate is a physical martial art involving vigorous exercise, body contact, and the use of various techniques that carry an inherent risk of injury. I voluntarily assume all risks associated with my (or my child's) participation in ASK classes, including but not limited to falls, contact with other participants, and the physical demands of training.

2. Medical Declaration

I confirm that the participant is in good physical health and has no medical conditions that would prevent safe participation in karate training.

3. Code of Conduct & Safety

I agree to abide by the ASK Code of Conduct. I understand that following the instructor's safety directions is mandatory to ensure a safe training environment for all students.

4. Waiver and Release of Liability

I hereby release and hold harmless Association of Shotokan Karate (ASK), its instructors, and its affiliates from any and all liability, claims, or causes of action arising out of any injury or loss suffered during club activities.

5. Consent & Signature

Participation Consent: I confirm that I have read and agree to this Participation Waiver.

Data Protection: I consent to ASK using my email address for essential club communications (grading dates, event notices, etc.).

Code of Conduct

Club Name: Kessingland Shotokan Karate Club

1. Purpose & Scope

• The Association of Shotokan Karate (ASK) promotes traditional Shotokan Karate following Kase-Ha principles.

• All members, students, parents, and guardians must follow this Code of Conduct to ensure a safe, respectful, and supportive environment for everyone.

2. General Member Responsibilities & Expectations

• Hold a valid ASK License and keep membership details up to date.

• Follow proper dojo etiquette (Reishiki) at all times.

• Show respect to instructors, senior grades, and fellow members.

• Represent the ASK positively inside and outside the dojo.

3. Safety & Welfare

• Sign in at the start of every lesson.

• Parents or guardians leaving the premises during training must provide emergency contact details.

• Inform instructors before class begins of any injuries, illnesses, or medical conditions.

• Unsafe or reckless behavior will not be tolerated.

• Report all training-related injuries or accidents immediately to the instructor in charge.

• Do not train if you feel unwell.

4. Training Standards

• Train regularly with effort, sincerity, and self-control.

• Wear a clean, properly fitted karate gi with the appropriate belt.

• Remove all jewelry and keep fingernails and toenails clean and trimmed short.

• No smoking, alcohol, or drugs before or during training.

5. Conduct & Behaviour

• Use polite, respectful, and encouraging language at all times.

• Refrain from any aggressive, intimidating, or disruptive behavior.

• Accept constructive feedback and instruction respectfully.

6. Dojo Etiquette (Reishiki)

• Bow (Rei) upon entering and leaving the dojo floor.

• Bow to instructors, senior grades, and training partners before and after practice.

• Maintain discipline, focus, and quiet concentration throughout training.

• Always seek permission from an instructor before leaving the dojo floor during a lesson.

7. Attendance & Communication

• Attend classes regularly and inform instructors in advance of any expected absence.

• Follow correct communication procedures.

• Follow the official lesson sign-in and sign-out procedures for your club.

8. Junior Members (Under 16s)

• Remain inside the dojo hall until collected by a designated parent or guardian.

• Maintain discipline while waiting.

9. Code of Conduct for Parents & Guardians

• Encourage participation, effort, and sportsmanship without applying unnecessary pressure.

• Support instructors, referees, and club officials in their decisions.

• Promote a culture of mutual respect, discipline, and inclusion.

• Refrain from using abusive, critical, or derogatory language.

• Turn all phones to silent and do not make/take calls within the dojo.

• Do not take photographs or videos without prior permission from the instructor in charge.

10. Safeguarding

• ASK instructors operate a zero-tolerance policy for bullying, harassment, or discrimination of any kind.

• Report any welfare or safeguarding concerns promptly to club instructors or the Designated Safeguarding Lead.

11. Agreement

• All members, students, parents, and guardians must agree to adhere to all sections of this Code of Conduct before commencing training.
