AASU was founded to provide a safe and supportive space for Asian American and Pacific Islander students on Tulane's campus. The organization acknowledges the minority's presence on campus and works to advocate for their identity within a larger community.
Currently, AASU continues to promote this safe space for our members. We work to host fun events, facilitate identity discussions, advertise related events, and develop inclusion on our campus—not only for AAPIs but all students as well.
Bobby Yan '95 founded the Asian American Student Union in 1994 along with his peers from Tulane's Black Student Union (BSU). Their goals were to provide a space for the Asian American minority on campus, while also collaborating with and supporting other multicultural organizations.
Yan majored in Communications at Tulane University, and he spent most of his college years getting involved with local media. During lunch with the 2019 AASU e-board, Yan shared that he had hosted a radio show in New Orleans, which was even frequented by well-known figures in pop culture, such as Eminem and Lil Wayne. He also spoke about his experience as an Asian American in the industry and the challenges he went through at the start of his career after graduating.
Yan is now currently a TV and film director, working on various projects. He has won six Emmy Awards in Sports television and has worked on hundreds of music videos and commercials. To learn more about his work, visit http://www.bobbyyan.com/
AASU is honored to have been nominated for the Martha H. Sullivan Student Organization of the Year award! Big congratulations to SAPHE (Sexual Aggression Peer Hotline and Education) and The Tulane Hullabaloo for winning this award and for working tirelessly for the sake of Tulane’s student body!
We’d also like to recognize some of the AASU seniors that were awarded Leadership Medallions for their service to Tulane, including our very own e-board members Jessica Li and Mark Xiao! We’re so thankful for all the work they’ve done, and we’ll miss them next semester!
AASU was nominated for the Martha H. Sullivan Student Organization of the Year award! It was truly an honor, but we’d also like to congratulate Tulane EMS (TEMS) on their win!!! They deserve all the recognition for their hard work during the year and especially for lending a hand during this pandemic. They are heroes.
Additionally, our former Co-President '20, Bryant Nguyen, was nominated for the Gary Lawton Fretwell award, and our former Co-President '21, Rey Arcenas, received this prestigious award! The two of them have not only impacted our organization, but their leadership has helped all of us grow as well.
Congratulations to all nominees and award recipients!
