News Gathering
Preparing the Story
Before I start working on a story, I get background information on what the story is going to be about. I conduct my own background research before setting up an interview. I then call the person/business that I am interested in talking to and ask for permission to do a news story on them. While on the phone, we will set up a time and place where we will meet for the interview.
Interview Process
I always think of my five W's when writing my interview questions. When interviewing the owner of dance studio, Starsin Motion, my questions were as follows:
Will you say your name and spell it?
When did this business get started?
What classes do your offer?
What age range do you teach?
Why did you start this business?
How did you get into dance?
Do you have any advice for any coaches or dancers that want to start their own studio?
Are you willing to provide help to different dance teams in the district?
is there anything else you would like the viewers to know?
After the interview is over I then set up the camera to get B-roll footage on the topics that were discussed in the interview.
Being Engaged
To further understand the classes that I filmed, I participated in the Flip and Fly class. The class was an intense 45 minute session where the owner, Jill Morris, taught the class simple but exciting techniques using a silk hammock. I believe being engaged with your story will help you better understand and be able to produce a successful package. I also enjoyed taking the class.
Final Product
After I get all of my information and B-roll together I write my script, record my VO, and plug all of my footage properly together.
