Aashram (English: Hermitage) is an Indian Hindi-language crime drama web series directed by Prakash Jha for MX Player original.[1] It is produced by Prakash Jha under Prakash Jha Productions.[2] The series stars Bobby Deol along with Aaditi Pohankar, Darshan Kumar, Chandan Roy Sanyal, Tushar Pandey, Anupriya Goenka, Adhyayan Suman, Vikram Kochhar, Esha Gupta, Tridha Choudhury, Rajeev Siddhartha, Sachin Shroff, Anurita Jha, Parinitaa Seth, Jahangir Khan, Kanupriya Gupta, Preeti Sood, Navdeep Tomar and Ayaan Aditya, in key roles.[3][4] It is written by Madhvi Bhatt, Avinash Kumar, Sanjay Masoomm, Tejpal Singh Rawat and Kuldeep Ruhil.[5] Its first season was made available for streaming on OTT platform MX Player for free from 28 August 2020.[6]

The story revolves around a godman, Baba Nirala (Bobby Deol), whose followers (mostly from the disadvantaged sections of the society) have blind faith in him and will do anything that he asks of them. In reality, he is a conman who ensures that his devotees devote their wealth to him and stay attached to his ashram for life. Politicians Hukum Singh (Sachin Shroff) and incumbent CM Sundar Lal (Anil Rastogi) vie for Baba Nirala's support in the upcoming State Legislative Assembly Elections owing to his large number of followers for their vote bank politics, which only increase after a pop singer, Tinka Singh (Adhyayan Suman) decides to conduct tours with Baba Nirala to promote his new song.

In December 2020, Jodhpur Court had served a legal notice to Bobby Deol and director Prakash Jha after Karni Sena filed a case on the actor and the director for hurting their sentiments and stated that the show "is an attempt to discredit Hinduism and Ashrams".[14][15] In October 2021, the Bajrang Dal group targeted Aashram web series sets and Prakash Jha for defaming Hindus and the entire aashram system, through his web series, whereas the sets were vandalised by the group.[16] Director Prakash Jha stated that "They will voice their concerns, but I think about the thousands who see my project in the correct manner. It is no joke that 1.5 billion people watched it. If we say there will be no objection, it is not right. "[17] Later, Bobby Deol supported Jha and stated that the show is not about defaming anyone and as an actor nothing else matters.[18]

The Sanskrit noun rama- is a thematic nominal derivative from the root rami 'toil' (< PIE *remh2) with the prefix 'towards.'[4] An ashram is a place where one strives towards a goal in a disciplined manner. Such a goal could be ascetic, spiritual, yogic or any other.[5]

An ashram would traditionally, but not necessarily in contemporary times, be located far from human habitation, in forests or mountainous regions, amidst refreshing natural surroundings conducive to spiritual instruction and meditation. The residents of an ashram regularly performed spiritual and physical exercises, such as the various forms of yoga. Other sacrifices and penances, such as yajnas, were also performed.[6] Many ashrams also served as gurukulas, residential schools for children under the guru-shishya tradition.

Sometimes, the goal of a pilgrimage to the ashram was not tranquility, but instruction in some art, especially warfare. In the Ramayana, the princes of ancient Ayodhya, Rama, and Lakshmana, go to Vishvamitra's ashram to protect his yajnas from being defiled by emissary-demons of Ravana. After they prove their mettle, the princes receive martial instruction from the sage, especially in the use of divine weapons. In the Mahabharata, Krishna, in his youth, goes to the ashram of Sandipani to gain knowledge of both intellectual and spiritual matters.

Boarding schools, especially in the tribal areas of Maharashtra and elsewhere in India, are called ashram shala or ashram schools. One such school is the Lok Biradari Prakalp Ashram Shala.[7][8]

A number of ashrams have been established outside India. Typically, these ashrams are connected to Indian lineages,[9] focus on imparting Yoga-related teachings, often in residential retreats, and are headed by spiritual teachers (Indians or Western).

In addition to practicing yoga and meditation, attendees may also receive instruction from a religious teacher and do some type of manual or mental work during their stay at the ashram.

An ashram is the name traditionally given to a spiritual hermitage or a Hindu monastery. It can be used to describe the place where a spiritual or religious guru and their disciples live. The term may also be used to describe the community of people who reside in such a place.

Ashrams have existed in India for thousands of years. They are mostly associated with Hinduism, although other religions, including Christianity, have also adopted the model of the ashram as a spiritual retreat or residence. Historically, ashrams were located in remote places, well away from the rest of the community. They would often be in beautiful rural locations, such as forests or mountain ranges, with the natural surroundings to enhance the spiritual practices taking place there.

Although ashrams are generally considered as places to find spiritual peace and tranquility, they were also sometimes used as places for instruction in other disciplines such as martial arts. They also sometimes functioned as schools for the children of gurus.

These days, ashrams are not necessarily in such remote places, and a religious or spiritual guru and his/her disciples may choose any location to live. Usually representing a return to a simpler way of living with a focus on awakening and finding meaning in life, modern day ashrams have been established in the West in places such as Virginia, New York and Canada. They also are often still within the Indian lineage and they tend to focus on yoga. There, yogis who wish to deepen their practice and knowledge, may study the scriptures, meditate, practice yoga and perform karma yoga duties.

The ashram spanned a 13-acre site at the base of the mist-shrouded Velliangiri Hills, a part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve in Tamil Nadu. The location reinforced how little divided us from a tropical wilderness where leopards, tigers, and elephants roamed. The premises had simplicity without detached functionality. The aesthetic was pleasing, revealing artful detail in the carefully positioned stone, wood, and indigenous flora. Nothing manicured, nothing untamed. Many indoor spaces were incredibly atmospheric. Beautiful mural-adorned ceilings, hand-painted with natural dyes, created an understated, dignified grandeur.

Admittedly, the tight, repetitive schedule, the devotional requirement, and the Indian culture were a lot to drink in. Tied to the ashram premises on our visa, walls eventually began to close in after nigh three months. Still, I embarked on a spiritual experience outside the physical realm while making inroads toward a firmware upgrade Lisa 2.0. The hundreds of North Oakland residents once connected to the ashram had mainly lived in houses and apartments they owned or rented, not SYDA property. The foundation appears to have bought most of its property in the 1990s and early 2000s. Nobody is entirely sure why the organization acquired so much real estate in the area, or why it has let many of the houses and lots sit empty for years.
